Review of Kes (1970) by Tara S — 02 Apr 2010
The second best British film ever made (behind Lawrence Of Arabia). This feels like a British, and particularly northern, interpretation of Francois Truffaut's The 400 Blows, whilst remaining a faithful adaptation of Barry Hines' novel.
David Bradley is a sensation as Billy Casper, showing not an ounce of vanity or effort, but purely being the character, and this is extended to the film itself. Loach perfectly captured British life and has continued to do so to this day.
A true masterpiece.
