Review of Kes (1970) by Stefanos T — 26 Oct 2011
I haven't felt such realism in a film like Kes. What caught me completely off guard, is the weird northern dialect the actors speak which make it impossible to catch up every word without any subtitles.
"You" equals "tha", "ain't" equals "in't". It's a challenge to wholly understand what they are saying but Kes is purely a visual film. All the essentials of the narrative are lucid and concrete, and the dialogue merely adds up to level of realism.
Non professional actors are not necessarily better than professional actors, however, when they are good, you care more about them than you do for theatrical actors. It's hard to describe the natural when you can see it for yourself.
I haven't seen this approach to acting since The Bicycle Thief.
