Review of Keoma (1976) by Nathan N — 02 Oct 2009
Keoma is an absolutely stellar spaghetti western, one of the finest the genre has to offer. I listened to an interview with Castellari a few days ago in which he cited Peckinpah as a major influence. He wasn't kidding around.
His is a vision inspired deeply by Peckinpah but with a uniqueness all it's own. Beyond slow motion and quick, contrasting edits, Castellari displays technique that would influence Sam Rami. The film moves well and entertains effortlessly thanks to a brisk pace, a ragged performance from Nero and a sense that you are seeing something special.
I realy can't say enough about Keoma. Besides some horrid lyrical choices with the music and a choppy ending, it's pretty close to perfect.
