Review of Kelly's Heroes (1970) by Widget L — 25 Jun 2008
Near perfect war/comedy/heist flick. A group of American soldiers led by Kelly, Big Joe, and proto-hippie tank driver Oddball (Clint Eastwood, Telly Savalas and a show stealing Donald Sutherland) learn of a fortune of Nazi gold 30 miles behind enemy lines, and decide to get a little something extra out of the war, soon the word spreads and half the division is after the loot, forcing Kelly and his men to race to the town, defeat the German defenders.
..and maybe inadvertently win the war. Classic comedy, classic war film and a classic caper combine to form one of the most entertaining flicks ever made. Sutherland is great (in the middle of a battle when asked what he's doing lounging about "Eating some cheese, drinking some wine and soaking up some sun").
By turns authentic and absurd the movies influence can be felt even toady, see George Clooney's Three Kings or the new video game Battlefield: Bad Company.
