Review of Kelly's Heroes (1970) by John E — 09 Jun 2011
Kelly's Heroes is a lot of fun. Don Rickles and Clint Eastwood play themselves while the rest of the cast hams it up in a way that never chews up the scenery thanks to the blackly humorous script. The motley crew screws around with some Nazis in a vainglorious and overblown effort to seize a helluva stockpile of gold bars.
War means nothing to them: they are tired of the patriotic banner and swear allegiance only to each other (i.e. those who wish to get a piece of the action). The movie surprises with some elaborate and well-constructed action set-pieces as well as its satirical take on the higher-ups who play a real-life game of Risk.
But even without its '70s antiwar zeitgeist, it's still a great story about a bunch of guys who just want to retire in comfort. And who can blame them for that?
