Review of Kelly's Heroes (1970) by Olli H — 06 Sep 2011
"Kelly's Heroes" is set on the WWII France, where former lieutenant Pvt Kelly (Clint Eastwood) captures a Nazi officers and learns about treasure worth of millions of dollars. Enlisting his sergent Big Joe (Telly Savalas), the supply sergent Crapgame (Don Rickles), the crazy hippie tank commander Oddball (Donald Sutherland) and his squad to the treasure hunt, they make their way behind the enemylines. Their greed is mistaked as bravery by the gung-ho General Colt (Carroll O'Connor), who thinks they are heroes instead of thieves.
"Kelly's Heroes" is a very funny and yet very serious war movie. There are some very good war scenes, with great pacing and cinematography. The acting is ok but Donald Sutherland is by far the best of the bunch, his character is Oddball is the crazy professional, whose comments inspire humor but his actions inspire bravery. The tank assault through the train tunnel was awesome. Clint Eastwood was a bit too serious here, but he did a great western spoof in the end with Telly Savalas & Sutherland.
In the end, "Kelly's Heroes" fell into the unusual war-comedy category, of which I personally haven't seen much of an example, but since I liked this one I reckon I'm gonna love "M*A*S*H".
