Review of Keeping Up with the Steins (2006) by Danielle S — 08 Apr 2008
For fans of Jeremy Piven, Keeping Up With the Steins pits Piven in an unfamiliar role: the father. The film mainly follows Benjamin Fielder, a young Jewish boy who fears his upcoming bar mitzvah. It takes awhile to get into the film, and although a comedy, there are serious moments that interrupt the meter, and, for me, disrupt the story a bit.
I think a problem might have been the use of score to elevate such situations. Regardless, Keeping Up With the Steins is a fun movie to watch, as a mild education in Jewish upbringing (in the way Big Fat Greek Wedding, might be), and as a lighthearted comedy that tries to be serious, with varying success, in between the jokes.
