Review of Keeping Mum (2005) by Jake S — 13 May 2010
This quaint essentially English film incorporates some stunning examples of high resolution cinematography, for the clarity in parts in relation to lighting is to me is nothing but exceptional, greyscale, saturation, contrast and white balance ect are all used beautifully, you really can tell the Director Of Photography knows their stuff.
As for the narrative I was left feeling the film being somewhat of an anti-climax when one compares this to crop of famous cast members whom are involved, I feel the last 40mins of the narrative could have been condensed considerably as the pace drops, negative feedback for the scriptwriters.
I canâ??t help but wonder is the genre a drama or comedy, unfortunately as it is marketed as somewhat of a dark comedy in hybrid with drama it doesnâ??t adhere to my initial expectation and becomes somewhat of a let down.
The renowned cast members all bring to their roles good believable performances; nevertheless as Maggie Smith is stereotyped to dramatisations, in a sinister role her as the character she portrays just doesnâ??t do it for me, I feel it is rather uncomfortable in places but yet again demonstrates the diversity of film genres and roles she is adaptable to perform within.
This extends to that of Rowan Atkinsonâ??s performance. Not a bad film, I sense one has to approach viewing the film for the first time with little expectation and you wonâ??t be disappointed.
