Review of Keep Cool (1997) by X. T — 04 Mar 2008
Wow, this is completely different from any of Zhang's other films except for some familiar actors he used. The director himself appears in an extended cameo. There are enough handheld shots and jump cuts to make Chungking Express look stylistically rigorous.
The style is almost a parody of these Breathless influenced films. The premise of the story is kind of like Chungking Express but quickly diverges to a vengeful black comedy. Jiang Wen plays the stuttering lead wonderfully, though he looks too old for his part.
Definitely Zhang's funniest and most commercial film before he went into his martial arts pics.
