Review of Kedi (2017) by Nilufer R — 20 Nov 2017
8/10.
Kedi is as much about cats as it is about Istanbul and its people. It follows various examples of the relationships of stray cats with the people of Istanbul and the city itself. Perfectly showcases the dynamics of thousands of cats moving freely through a city without a care in the world, and the way they interact with the people who feed them, pet them, and give them refuge. The love these people have for the cats is truely moving, and a great example of how we all should interact with wildlife and nature in general.
The beautiful cinematography helps bring to life the city and the animals, telling small stories of a cat roaming the streets looking for food, or simply laying in the sun on top of a market stand.
The score however feels dull and a bit too minimal, when it could have helped make the city a more memorable place. The overall narrative also fumbles mid way through losing it's focus and ending up with a colage of similar situations.
It's a great watch overall if you're a cat person, and if you're not, give the movie a try, you might find yourself to be one at the end.
