Review of Keanu (2016) by Brandon W — 12 Jul 2016
Keanu is directed by Peter Atencio, who directed all of the Key & Peele episode skits, and it stars Jordan Peele and Keegan-Michael Key in a comedy film about a jobless guy who got broke up with his girlfriend, when a kitten comes to his house, and his life comes around full circle.
So his cousin Clarence (Keegan-Michael Key) and Rell (Jordan Peele) hangs out, only to realize that Rell's house has been broken in, and his pet has been kidnapped. So with the help of Rell's neighbor, they went to a club where they have his kitten, and in order to fit in, they have to act like someone that they're not, to save Keanu.
I've not seen an episode of Key & Peele, but I've seen clips of it from YouTube, which are funny, and I see Keegan-Michael Key in some comedy films which he's usually pretty funny. So with a weird premise like this, is definitely that you probably see in a skit, but it really worked as a movie that is really up my alley.
The interplay between Key and Peele is still there as it's really funny to listen to them, and they have the comedic chops together even in a film. The stuff that they have to go through to save Keanu is ridiculous, but it never felt out of place and is enjoyably over the top.
The jokes in this are unbelievably funny for me that I kept cracking up so much. The action is surprisingly good, and when it gets serious, it really gets serious which surprised me, which I appreciated it a bit more because of the script by Alex Rubens and main co-star Jordan Peele who only done comedy stuff, and for the fact that they did it well, makes me look more forward to Jordan Peele's directorial debut of his first horror film called Get Out.
There may be some jokes that might not hit the target, but for me, I didn't really notice them as I just had such fantastic time that I would watch this for quite some time.
