Review of Keanu (2016) by The Movie G — 24 Jul 2016
What would've been an inspired comedic idea for a series of running sketches in a TV show is stretched out to make a feature length film and the seams show. That is not to say it isn't funny or at least quite cute at times (the kitten is certainly the cutest thing called Keanu ever to grace our screen since My Own Private Idaho) and there are a few good gags here - the kitty movie posters for example are particularly sublime.
But there are also a lot of contrived padding, ridiculous and unreal situations that irritates more than tickles one's funny bone and toothless baddies to cope with. Key and Peele are charming and the slight film largely coasts on that charm and their chemistry to keep afloat but otherwise, I'll take my Keanu in the human form next time.
