Review of Keanu (2016) by Electronick — 13 Jun 2016
I had heard many things about this film prior to me seeing it. I had heard that it was one of the best comedies to come out in years but I'm just going t say "I don't get it". It is not the worst comedy that I had ever seen but I do not see how people see this as one of the best comedies in recent memory. I have not seen a Key and Peele comedy sketch but just based on this film alone it, there style appears unimpressive. The main problem with the film is that it appears to have an inconsistent tone. The film is marketed as a goofy buddy- comedy but there are some instances when the tone gets serious especially during a scene when the protagonists are trying to negotiate with the gang leader Chedder about negotiating a deal to get Keanu. In fact it is surprising to see the characters taking the plot seriously in a film with such a ludicrous premise. The parts that were even supposed to be funny didn't really get a laugh out of me aside from the George Micheal's ad Matrix dream sequence. There was even a subtle homage to the matrix by even having the same color palate as those movies. Aside from that it doesn't really have that many laughs. It is no where near as bad as some comedies like the Friedberg and Seltzer.
Parody movies and the jokes do have a punch it just wasn't my sense of humor.
