Review of Katy Perry: Part of Me (2012) by Pongpunya K — 07 Oct 2012
Has a bit more going for it than your standard concert documentary. So this follows Katy Perry's California Dreams Tour, all while giving a small glimpse into her personal life backstage and on the road.
I am completely of the mindset that if you've seen one concert documentary, you've kind of seen them all. They all give you marginal insight into their subject's non-celebrity personality while playing you their greatest hits, usually in 3D.
This formula almost always equates to the bigger fan you are of the music, the more apt you are to enjoy the show. I am actually kind of a fan of Katy Perry's catchy songs, so I did enjoy the music.
.. but I do think she sounds better on the radio. It's not like these aren't impressive concerts, because they are, but she's missing the ease and natural fluency that goes with being on stage.
What does work for her are all of the accouterments that goes with a Katy Perry show, like all of her elaborate costumes; they are louder than the 80's, and it's entertaining to see just what she will wear next.
It is also nice to get a little depth to her story with Russell Brand, and to do so without any mudslinging. It's already clear what you are getting before you watch it, and I suppose that if you can't afford tickets to see one of her bombastic shows, this is perfectly serviceable as an alternative.
