Review of Katalin Varga (2009) by Minna S — 07 Jul 2010
Highly assured debut feature from Strickland, which uses the mysterious beauty of the Transylvanian Carpathian mountains as a backdrop to a tale of revenge and redemption. Despite a few modern details, the story feels timeless and morally complex and the cast, especially Peter in the title role are exceptional.
Strickland's use of almost avant garde sound is vivid and brings a further dimension to the film, using both natural sound and music with a lot of attention to detail and creating an almost supernatural sense of unease.
