Review of Kaminey (2009) by Shariq M — 20 Jun 2010
Kaminey, the tale of twin brothers Charlie and Guddu, who no longer wants anything to do with one another. One is a small time crock and a horserace fixer, and the second is a good hearted hard working young man. One rainy night in Mumbai their paths cross when they got entangled with very dangerous people. Charlie, in his scheme of getting rich and making it big, steals "a guitar" worth millions and becomes the target of a very powerful and most feared crime lord and his cronies including corrupt cops. Guddu loves Sweetie, Priyanka Chopra, and when he knocked her up he is forced to marry her quickly, not realizing that she is the sister of a rogue politician who bases his upcoming campaign on anti-immigrant rants, and would kill to prevent linking his sister to an immigrant from Uttar Pradesh.
Kaminey is a fast paced crime caper that would keep you at the edge of your seat for the whole run. Shahid Kapur is excellent in the dual roles of the twin brothers. The two are distinctively different and Shahid, helped by well written roles, is portraying them almost perfectly.
The film has some memorable visuals, and shot in stunning way. Rain sets the mood of the film and plays an integral part in moving the plot. So does horseracing, which is in the heart of Charlie's fantasy, an iconic image of him running among horses with blinders on, and wanting to get away and becoming a big player who gets the money and the girl. The main theme song. success if it is not already there.
All that said, the film has some flaws, like the ending, which really doesn't fare well with the rest of the film. Also the film is too precious about the brother's speech impediments, Charlie is lispers and Guddu is a stutterer. In Guddu's case it plays a role in building his characteristic and in his relationship with Sweetie, but Charlie's lisp proof to be a gimmicky thing that is played more for comic relief than anything else.
All and all, it is a very well made film, and it deserves critical acclaim and commercial success.
