Review of Kamikaze Girls (2004) by Rachael H — 04 Jun 2008
A head-spinning Japanese comedy, rather fortunate to have landed itself a UK theatrical release, whose hyper-manic mannerisms, false beginnings and false endings prove exhausting after just ten minutes and irritating in the extreme thereafter.
.. The closest we've had to it in the West, by my reckoning, is "Tank Girl", or "Josie and the Pussycats", another zappy teenpic where the attempt to spoof the grotesque excesses of consumption was undermined by product placement as far as the eye could see.
This is its own film, but almost the dictionary definition of an acquired taste: like being forced to drink Sunny Delight non-stop for two hours whilst zipped into a Hello Kitty backpack.
