Review of Kamikaze Girls (2004) by Dan B — 23 Nov 2009
Delightful and demented (the latter word being my kidsâ?? description) bit of Japanese bubblegum that makes its fairly straightforward â??unlikely friendshipâ?? story into something utterly charming, thanks to its high-spirited cast and unrestrained visual imagination.
The closest Western equivalents I can think of are Lurhmannâ??s Romeo & Juliet or Amelie (but for a younger audience.) If youâ??re relaxed about a bit of strong language, it makes an excellent family movie and a cross cultural alternative to Hannah Montana for tween girls (and open-minded boys).
Tremendous fun.
