Review of Kalifornia (1993) by Andrew H — 21 Oct 2011
Kalifornia is a fantastic movie. I'm very partial to Fight Club and Inglourious Basterds, but I feel that this could be Brad Pitt's best performance. He completely embodies the character of Early, a serial killer that operates on impulses, doing what he wants, when he wants.
David Duchovny's character is trying to write about serial killers the entire time, and a big issue that comes up is the fact that since he hasn't killed anyone himself, how can he write about it or even begin to understand the mind of a killer? He can only observe.
The movie is very '90s and (maybe it's just David Duchovny's presence) feels like an X-Files episode. It's compelling, engrossing, and hard to look away from, filled with fantastic performances and thought provoking writing.
