Review of Kalifornia (1993) by Bradley F — 13 Jan 2009
Kalifornia is a movie about serial killers and why they do the things they do. A lot of the more recent movies about serial killers deal with extremely psychotic minds. They attempt to lay out some elaborate master plan that has a message behind it (Saw, Se7ev for examples). The truth is, not all serial killers have a master plan, or are smart enough to carry out some huge scheme. Kalifornia tries to deliver that message to the audience. Serial killers can be anyone and they may kill for any number of reasons.
Kalifornia is about need and survival for all four main characters. It's about reasoning with an irrational mind or using an irrational mind, to try to break free from what could be a horrible ending. Oh, and it's also a great film to show why you shouldn't let strangers into your car!
One other thing to note is that Brad Pitt's acting in this film is incredible. He flowed seamlessly into this role, which was a shock to me, since it's so unlike anything I'd seen him in. You'd almost think every other role he'd played was forced.
