Review of Kagemusha (1980) by Kevin K — 13 Feb 2010
Probably the most underrated film in Kurosawa's career. The film is a visual and technical marvel. But at the same time, it's also far more cerebral than it's often given credit for. In fact, it's something of a masterpiece, exploring key themes of Kurosawa's films, such as the nature of power, while also adding new depths to the samurai film genre, going places one would have to look a little harder to see at first.
It asks big questions, like how the shadow self can exist without the physical self, and poses the idea that the two men were cut from the same cloth, two halves of the same coin.
