Review of Kafka (1991) by Zeeshan M — 15 Jun 2008
Having seen some of Soderberg's later oeuvre and being less than impressed, I had heard his earlier work was a little more interesting. Yet I was still surprised by how entertaining and clever this film was.
Mixing fact and fiction, the enjoyment of the film is proportionate to how much one has read about/by Kafka. Jeremy Irons as Kafka is a strange casting choice because of his distinct voice and charisma.
It is not hard to see this as a vanity project and a professionally manufactured piece of fan-fiction. Lightweight without being empty. A loving wank by Kafka fans for Kafka fans. Can be entertaining with the appropriate set of expectations I think.
The final shot of the film is the only moment where Irons appears to be a dead ringer for Kafka.
