Review of Kabluey (2007) by Richard S — 21 Sep 2008
Here is the definition of successful indie. The writer/director/star works with a small cast in a modest location and uses bittersweet humor to shine a light on situations that could have easily become annoyingly politicized.
This isn't, at least most of the time, the too clever for its own good, faux-indie. There's a touch of Lynch, but not a drop of Juno. And for that, I am thankful. It's an oft intriguing, small film that focuses on what it's like to live as a lonely war bride in a nowhere town in the grips of our nationwide economic downturn.
Intriguingly enough, Kudrow is far more successful as the worn, working class mother than her sitcom co-star ever managed to be. This will probably never be anyone's favorite, but it deserves a little life on DVD.
