Review of Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (2001) by Sam T — 25 Jun 2007
The Bollywood film for those interested in getting into Bollywood. Leave all your expectatins and everything you know about the genre at the door and just sink into one of the most beautiful, dynamic and emotional film made in recent years staring the heavies of the Bollywood insdustry.
When Rashul (Sharhrukh Khan), the adopted son of a billionar (Amitabh Bachchan) marries a woman of a lower social order instead of the woman his father picked for him Yash turns his son out and destroys what was once a close and loving family.
Ten years later Rahul's younger brother Rohan (Hrithik Roshan), who has physically changed tremendously, tracks his estranged brother to London, England where he and his sister in law Poo (Kareena Kapoor) plot to reunite the family.
Rohan poses as a student from India and becomes his unexpecting brother's border. The drama then unfolds, songs are sang, costumes are worn, tears are shed. A truly beautiful movie, both emotionally and techinically where the men are all likeable studs and featuring the most beautiful women currently in the film industry today.
Remember when Chicago was hailed the return of the musical? Well the Americans don't make movies like this...and they should just stop trying to make musicals. This is the way a musical should be made.
Truly an exceptional motion picture experience.
