Review of Kabali (2016) by Karthik P — 16 Aug 2016
A very different dimension of the 'actor' Rajini has been brought out to the fore by Pa.Ranjith. Brilliant characterisation of a yesteryear don, who initially thinks he has got nothing to lose on being released from the jail, re-establish his empire and reclaim what has been lost during his term in jail including, the status of deprived minority groups of Malaysia.
Just when this happens, he gets severely distracted by discovering the presence of his family and this forces him to slow down on his endeavour and go on a pursuit of reunion with his family whilst even though he is been hunted by his rivals.
Rajinikanth has got under the skin of this Kabaleeshwaran character. Especially, on how an angry young man who fights for equality gets turned into a leader by the demands of the situation and the constant push from his wife.
This reason shows why the discovery of his wife still being alive distracts him so much. A brilliant film that has tapped the potential of all the actors involved. Especially, Radhika Apte has lived as Kumudhavalli .
Kudos to Ranjith for not compromising into Rajinikanth's aura and go with a time tested formulaic script. He has stuck to his guns and delivered a stunner for only his 3rd films. A gem of a film in both Ranjith and Rajini's career.
