Review of K-PAX (2001) by Phil C — 28 Nov 2010
K-PAX is about a man (Kevin Spacey) who ends up in a mental hospital after claiming to be from another planet.
My disclaimer for this review is that I have not yet seen One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, so I don't know whether things were recycled in this or not. I must say, though, it was a lot better than I thought it would be.
The main problem with this film is that it consistently hovers around didacticism and never quite reaches into any particular solidified statement. At the end, it's obvious the makers try to throw in some remark about human betterment-- bad idea. They needed to emphasize it more throughout the film.
Another thing that bothered me is that I wish they played with light a little bit more and really exaggerated it. I think that would've made it far more interesting.
It seems to me that the filmmakers were really afraid to take any risks, so what could've been a great film came out as just above mediocre. But I'm a sucker for Kevin Spacey-- 80%.
