Review of K-19: The Widowmaker (2002) by Malcolm J — 02 Jul 2010
2: Reasonably solid action thriller, but there are large sections that don't quite work. I much prefer The Hunt For Red October or Das Boot when it comes to sub pictures and The Hurt Locker when it comes to Bigelow films.
This is pretty standard genre star vehicle fair, which provides a stark contrast with her recent brilliant work. Some scenes certainly ring true, but others feel far too Hollywood (the swelling score doesn't help).
The story is compelling, but I get the feeling that a book recounting the historical events would have been more engaging. It is entertaining, but it fails to really inspire emotional or visceral involvement in the story or characters.
