Review of K-19: The Widowmaker (2002) by Christopher S — 12 Feb 2012
I could definitely see why this film was so hit and miss. I saw this after Kathryn Bigelow won the Best Director at the Academy Award. I now understand why Bigelow was not given too many directing opportunities in the business after seeing K-19.
K-19 had the potential to be a critical and box office success on the level of the Hunt for Red October. However, some of the choices made in this film left me puzzled. The Russian accents by Harrison Ford and Liam Neeson, along with the rest of the crew were atrocious.
They should have just done the Kevin Costner thing and speak in their normal dialects and drawls. K-19 was also horribly paced, making for a very long and drawn out 140 minutes. Bigelow definitely made up for all past indiscretions with the Hurt Locker but K-19 was not close to being her magnum opus.
