Review of Justin Bieber: Never Say Never (2011) by The D — 08 Apr 2013

Justin Bieber: Never Say Never is a musical documentary about the teen sensation's rise to fame and the "obstacles" he had to overcome to get there. I put obstacles in quotation marks because those obstacles he talked about in this documentary are extremely minor compared to what most other musicians have to face and they're barely obstacles at all. All he did to achieve fame was make a YOUTUBE channel and get noticed by USHER. I was never a Justin Bieber hater (I hated his music, not him) until I saw this documentary. Everything in this documentary makes him seem like a complete douchebag in real life. We get glimpses of his personal life, including his life with his parents and his friends, but he treats them like crap all the time for no reason what-so-ever. He is simply a douche. Perhaps even more unlikable than Bieber is Jadon Smith, who appears in this documentary and performs on stage with him. He also tells the audience that fame is hard, even though Jadon literally did no work to achieve his status considering he is Will Smith's son.

The documentary itself doesn't offer much insight into its subject either, besides his early life which I found somewhat interesting and it proved that he actually has some musical talent. It turns out that he is a pretty decent drummer and guitarist, he just chooses to make the shittiest music possible with his talents. Unfortunately, I was not in the demographic this movie was trying to reach so I won't give this movie props saying it might be good for the demographic because I don't know if it is. It still doesn't change the fact that this movie is awful.

I give this movie (2/10) solely because a few segments that show him growing up was interesting and die-hard fans might enjoy the concert footage.
