Review of Justice League: War (2014) by Rhynal R — 25 Jan 2014

The first movie out of the brand new 52 universe is action packed and filled with nods to previous version of characters and new ones. Start to finish the action is intense, but the story on the other hand, felt a bit cliched and I feel as if they severely underplayed Darkseid's strength and fortitude.

While the movie focused on the main 7, not enough time was spent on a lot of them so most of them felt 2D aside from Batman and Hal Jordan, who had the majority of the spotlight. Granted that this is supplemented by already existing comic book story and previous knowledge from other universes, but still.

As an origin story for the JL, some backstory would have been nice. Some new origins for people like Cyborg felt a bit forced but it was nice to see an origin for the actual team as some of the banter is insanely enjoyable, especially Batman and Green Lantern.

Superman, as always, is severely under-developed as a character, making it seem like all he is is a big brute who can't think and just has super strength; Batman, more chirpy than usual and I felt like this 10 second backstory he gave of himself was horribly out of timing; Flash had the least screen time and felt like an afterthought; Captain Marvel wasn't as enjoyable as he usually is but I loved the stressing on his lightning powers, not sure if that's old or new; Wonder Woman was a mixed bag in that I appreciated that she still spoke like she just came from Themyscera and as nice as it was seeing the beginning of the Supes/Wonder romance, I still felt no real chemistry between them.

Cybord? Ehh. Regardless of all these complaints, Still a good animated movie and fun to watch. 6/10.
