Review of Justice League: The New Frontier (2008) by Eric O — 29 Feb 2008
Waited a long time for this one, so here's a verbose review. I have enjoyed all the DC Superhero cartoons that I've seen which have Bruce Timm's name in the credits. Justice League: The New Frontier is no exception.
The second release under the DC Universe Original Movie label, this straight-to-DVD movie is an adaptation of writer/artist Darwyn Cooke's 2003-2004 mini-series, DC: The New Frontier. This movie was superior to Superman: Doomsday (meh), the DC movie that preceded it.
The voice cast features some pretty big names for a straight-to-DVD superhero cartoon (Brooke Shields, David Boreanaz, Neil Patrick Harris, etc.). The movie is rated PG-13 for language, moderate gore and violence, and mature story content.
It's kept in very good taste, however. The New Frontier will probably resonate most with viewers who grew up during or are initimately familiar with the Silver Age of comics, enjoy mid-20th Century American history, and/or those who love a great story.
Viewing this movie will hopefully make you want to seek out the source material by Cooke, and I wouldn't be surprised if that was the intent of the film's producers.
