It's no insult to this adaptation of Darwyn Cooke's masterful period superhero piece to say it falls short of the original's sprawling, epic scope; it's "just" a gorgeously animated look at the heroes of DC Comics' Silver Age and the historical era in which they debuted, with crackling vocal performances and political subtexts that are welcome in these troubled times.
