Review of Just Like Heaven (2005) by Alireza H — 19 Jul 2010
I've always maintained that it's not that I do not like the whole romantic comedy genre, it's the recent, general low quality of the production of it. I think Just Like Heaven is actually one of the rare ones that come out once in a blue moon that is likable and entertaining.
Nothing is really new here but I think Mark Ruffalo is one of the biggest reasons this film kind of works: a good actor plays it straight up. And Reese Witherspoon, while being neither really talented or in particularly pretty, has a great likable quality. And San Fransisco cannot hurt either.
I think the ending is just a bit too conventional. It will be nice if it's a bit more subtle, like she doesn't remember, but he takes a step to start something anew anyway... perhaps will be better.
Also, I think a good spirit is often missing in romantic comedy these days, which are often shallow and foul-spirited.
