Review of Just Like Heaven (1930) by Mike C — 04 Feb 2012
A cute enough movie. I thought I'd seen it but it's one of a few I have little memory of, so when it came on TBS last night, I watched it. I see I gave it 6/10 last time and was going to do the same this time.
As I said, it's cute, and I like that part. I like Ruffalo most of the time. My problem is the nature of the accident and a few other things along the way. I'm a diehard right-to-die guy, and I think movies like this are dangerous to that cause.
The whole issue could have been avoided had they not given her brain damage. Yeah, yeah, maybe it's not so dramatic, but you can still be in a coma and have a decent chance at life/death. But I guess they needed an outlet to bring up the dramatic pull the plug bit and the character of the other doctor.
So as much as I disagree with that and wish it were written differently, it also could have been written differently in the way the characters communicate. Witherspoon has no trouble guiding Ruffalo through a complicated medical procedure, but she cant use him to communicate with the other doctors and/or her sister? These are reasons it's a cute movie and not a good drama like City of Angels.
