Review of Jurassic World (2015) by Mike V — 08 Feb 2018
Let me say that while everything should recieve criticism and analysis, there's a lot of criticism thrown at this film that in reality is unwarranted and really over does it. Or that claims its nothing like Jurassic Park and just dumb which it isn't. Rather Jurassic World is a faithful sequel that follows up upon themes and concepts of the world created by Michael Crichton and Steven Spielberg in the original film and in its sequel The Lost World. A lot of events and what the story is of Jurassic World parallels and is close to what is in the book. A lot of also criticism towards the dinosaurs appearances are also cleverly address with reasons given by the books tho in a reverse yet make a lot of sense.
A fault I do share with most is the overuse of CGI but mainly towards the dinosaurs. Most critics and audiences had no idea a lot of CG was crafted for the environments which means the special effects team did a great job. But most of the dinosaurs being CG and haviing a similar dull gray coloring isn't good. the I. rex is white which is cool and being CG it adds to making her feel like a oddity of a creation. Though the Tyrannosaurus rex, Mososaurus (aquatic reptile, not a dinosaur btw), and Owen's velociraptors look great and near lifelike especially shown in the close up scenes between humans and those animals.
The characters are also not bad here and get way much more hate than deserved. Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard both bring their all in portraying a biologist and businesswoman who live in a world shared by humans and dinosaurs. Irfran Khan is not in this movie enough. The rest of the cast is also great in their required roles. I think what upsets most is that these characters aren't Alan Grant or Ellie Sattler or Ian Malcolm. which they never could be even if some quaities are shared (Owen sort of being a Steve McQueen / Indiana Jones version of Grant, Claire bearing some allusions to Hammond but for the most part being an original character). Though I would say Bryce Dallas Howard as Claire is my favorite character who while cold is more so a tough leader who has a no funy business approach to running the park.
It's not Jurassic Park. But nothing would be EXACTLY like that film. With the story about an actual operating theme park taking place two decades after the first film, in a world where cloning dinosaurs has long been a thing, obviously the world within this movie would be very different from the 90s technothrilller originally shown. It's not an Oscar movie or an indie film but it's far from a bad or unenjoyable movie. It's a great film and great Jurassic film.
