Review of Jurassic World (2015) by Danny R — 29 May 2016
Colin Trevorrow's impressive thrilling blockbuster sequel is a welcome return to form for the franchise. Taking place some 22 years after the deadly events from Steven Spielberg's classic original film "Jurassic Park.
" Those tragic events from that film have long since been buried, and the new bigger more modernized and polished park, "Jurassic World," has been operating safely for years. But because of flagging audience sales, the directors of the park have called upon chief scientist Dr.
Henry Wu, played superbly by B.D. Wong, who is the only returning cast member from the original film, to create a new attraction that is bigger, toothier, and more fearsome, in order to draw more visitors to the park.
The result is a monstrous hybrid called the "Indominus Rex," an 18 foot tall, 50 foot long walking nightmare, with long arms and razor-sharp talons, which has more teeth then the T-Rex. This super-deadly dino is housed in a specially constructed concrete & steel paddock, that has 40 foot tall walls.
Owen, a gifted raptor wrangler, played terrifically by the charismatic Chris Pratt, has been brought in by the female corporate director of the park, Claire, superbly played by the beautiful Bryce Dallas Howard, to assess the security of the paddock.
During this visit the Indominus Rex, breaks out and goes on a killing rampage that threatens the lives of the 20,000 visitors on the island park. It's now up to Owen along with his four trained raptors, and the island security team to try to stop the giant killer, Indominus Rex.
Adding to an already tense situation, Claire's two young visiting nephews, well-played by Nick Robinson & Ty Simpkins are out in the middle of the island on a ride, unaware that their location puts them right in the path of the Indominus Rex.
There is no Spielbergian sense of wonder, but Trevorrow, who also co-wrote the screenplay, keeps things suspenseful, fast-paced and highly enjoyable with his solid direction. Fine supporting turns by Irrfan Khan, Jake Johnson, Omar Sy, with special kudos to Vincent D' Onofrio, who delivers a compelling performance as Hoskins, the island park's sinister security chief.
The dinosaurs are all impressive, and the CGI visual effects are spectacular. And while some of the movie is predicable and the plot pretty simplistic and to the point, it does not take away from the fact that this is a first-rate summer thrill ride, that is hell of a lot of fun.
Don't miss it! Highly Recommended.
