Review of Jurassic World (2015) by Amrit T — 02 May 2016
A Whole New Jurassic World.
Jurassic World is magnificent spectacle, a fun, visually stunning thrill ride, even though it may be ridiculous at times. The whole cast is fun and likable, and the directing is very well done. The result is a very good summer blockbuster.
The action is fantastic, with a climax that matches the scope of the last 30 minutes of 2014's Godzilla. Thanks to Giacchino's great score the film did a great job in its attempt to recapture the magic of the first movie, giving the viewer a sense of awe and wonder. John Hammond would've been very proud. The acting was great and the kids were thankfully not a distraction. The story was decent, with a plot very close to that of the first film, but instead more of a rouge monster movie with a movie monster that definitely delivers.
There were some notable flaws in the movie. There were few moments that were unintentionally funny, there are also a few events what could be described as "cheesy" and "ridiculous". For example the human antagonist played by the fantastic Vincent Dinofrio did the best with what he had, but his ambitions were not the smartest of ideals, resulting in a 1 dimensional villain. Other than the villain, character development was fine on the 4 core protagonists, even the raptors were handled very well.
The directing was very well done, with very clever choice of shots. Trevorrow should be very proud in his first effort as a blockbuster director. The plot was in a way was very predictable and forgettable , but ultimately the positives outweigh the negatives with the best Jurassic Park sequel so far. In a world full of set up and mega million cinematic universes we finally have a fun blockbuster sequel that stands on its own, and it deserves credit just for that.
Rating: 7.7 (B+).
