Review of Jurassic Park III (2001) by Jessica V — 04 May 2013
Jurassic Park 3 is around the time where the ideas in the scriptwriting and directorial departments ran a tad short. The very opening seems small in comparison to the openings to both it's predecessors.
While the beginning part of every Jurassic Park movie has always been slow they've usually been at least entertaining. The beginning to 3 is pretty lackluster in comparison. But, after that first 20 minutes we get treated to an interesting enough action sequence involving the Spinosaurus, basically T-Rex 2.
0. To prove its the more daunting of foes, we see it and the T-Rex duke it out for about a minute where the Spinosaurus easily kills the other. I was kinda depressed to see the foe of the last two taken down so easily by the new one, and by new one I mean the old one with a slightly different look to it.
After this sequence we get some dull moments, one of which involves us discovering the one of the new main characters is a fake, a script idea that is completely unnecessary. Speaking of the cast, with the exception of Dr.
Grant for the first time in the series, every new character is piss-poor addition. But the Rassie award for worst actor/actress in the movie clearly goes to Tea Leoni, whose character emotes way too much and in the most annoying fashion possible.
The big problem is that while the first two Jurassic Park movies had nonstop action set pieces after the setup, this one does not. When there isn't action, there's dialogue moments, and they're really, really, dull.
One nice addition, however, is that the raptors are smart, and by that I mean even smarter than their predecessors. They communicate, show even more advanced signs of problem solving skills and hunt in much more coordinated patterns even showing the ability to set traps of sorts.
But, apparently these raptors can be warded off with a smokescreen. I kid you not. Jurassic Park 3 continues the trend of obnoxious kid characters. The first one made use of its obnoxious characters, second one somewhat but in this case it's less effectively used much like most everything else in this movie.
The ending can be described as questionable, convenient and underwhelming. For every little thing I like in this movie there's something bland or just flat out unlikeable. And again as I said before, most of the magic of the first two movies have been lost at this point.
Jurassic Park 3 isn't a complete screw-up but it's definitely the weakest link in the trilogy.
