Review of Jupiter Ascending (2015) by Casi H — 15 Mar 2016
A Sci-fi action film tailored to the female gaze? And you think I'm NOT gonna give it 5 stars?
This film is a pile of crazy, I don't deny it. But it is an absolute fun crazy and what I think everyone has failed to realize is that it isn't trying to be anything more than what it is. And, it's simply this. Big, pretty, space fun. That's all. And that's exactly what it delivers.
But there's more to it than that, in my opinion. This is a big dumb space opera and I loved it. It gave us a female lead that has to grow and make the right choices, but is strong without being a "Strong Independent Woman." She has flaws and weaknesses and even shallow desires, and I loved her. We had Eddie Redmayne giving the most ridiculous, and therefore greatest performance of his career. I loved every moment he was on screen.
Simply put, if this had been a movie about a guy? We'd have called it 5th Element and everyone would have loved it. But this is a movie made for women. It is tailored to the female gaze. How rare is an action film, let a lone a SCI FI action film, that is meant for women? This movie is a gem. A big, ridiculous, gaudy gem. And you should definitely go see it.
