Review of Jupiter Ascending (2015) by Josh G — 29 Jul 2015
While the Wachowskis have yet to rise to the spectacle of The Matrix films, this movie shows that they can still deliver a fine story.
It's a classic tale of a nobody-from-the-midwest who learns she will have a great role to play in interplanetary politics. Some want her dead. Others revere her as a queen. Mila Kunis plays Jupiter Jones well here, showing how she takes everything in stride, while also avoiding the misstep of being played for a fool.
Channing Tatum is also good here; I really enjoyed his protective streak, as well as his character's admission of past mistakes. Sean Bean is also good here, although his character seemed a little underdeveloped. Eddie Redmayne is annoying; his voice is too different, and it is difficult to hear what he is saying at times.
There is a good mix of plot, character development, and cool action sequences. There are also an appropriate amount of light moments. It's a good watch, and not as brain-meltingly complex as some of the Wachowski's other films.
