Review of Jupiter Ascending (2015) by Taufiq A — 23 Dec 2015
Jupiter Ascending is interesting plot-wise and visually pleasing, but the execution is sorely lacking. Action scenes go on for five minutes too long each, being predictable and without stakes despite being well-executed on a technical level.
The characters have interesting backstories and the world-building is generally swell, but no one has any fun with the material. The sibling squabble just off-centre is a potential gold mine, but is never fully realized, mostly due to it hinging on Eddie Redmayne's god-awful whispering villain.
That being said, once it kicks into gear, its an enjoyable enough slice, but it doesn't compare to the previous efforts of the Wachowski's nor to the Star Wars lore it so clearly aspires to. Think of it as a slightly less muddled and slightly less creative version of Lynch's Dune.
