Review of Jupiter Ascending (2015) by Lenny R — 31 Jul 2016
The core concept is actually somewhat interesting and original, but requires an exhausing amount of exposition. The film as a whole is a convoluted cartoon that takes itself far too seriously a lot of the time, verging on soap opera, and when it does try to be funny often fails (e.
G. the bureaucracy sequence, which almost looks like it was lifted from Brazil, except that it wasn't as good). Not a fan of the rocket boots, because they turn the fights into something from a Louis Leterrier movie, or maybe Matrix Revolutions - gravity becomes irrelevant to the point you can't tell which way is up.
Kunis and Tatum don't have much chemistry, making their romance awkward. The crazy Russian family seemed kinda stereotypical - though Sense8 made it obvious the Wachowskis can reduce even supposedly groundbreaking characters to lame stereotypes.
Eddie Redmayne should totally have his Oscar revoked and be excluded from all future consideration, because no amount of award-worthy thespianic brilliance will be able to balance out the hamtastically terrible performance he gives here.
Overall, this movie is further proof that the first Matrix was a fluke - it's still the only properly good movie the Wachowskis have made.
