Review of Juno (2007) by Jamie I — 26 Jun 2016
I wouldn't call screenwriter Diablo Cody brilliant but she certainly knows how to put the funny into her work. Coupled with Cody's screen writing is Ellen Page's definitely brilliant delivery. She takes Cody's paper lines and gives them life with all of Juno's ferociousness. Juno is sixteen and facing an unwanted pregnancy plans a "hasty abortion." When she can't go through with it she decides to have the baby and give it to a childless couple. That couple is Mark & Vanessa. And even though Vanessa wants to be a mother more than anything Mark refuses to grow up. Meanwhile Juno struggles with her feelings for baby daddy Paulie Bleeker. Even though Juno represents an irresponsible teenager, she represents an irresponsible teenager who makes an intelligent responsible decision and that's why you can respect her. The movie is funny, quirky and best of all Ellen Page is Juno. If only for that go see this. Now for some great lines!
"Hey there, big puffy version of Junebug!".
"Nah...I mean, I'm already pregnant, so what other kind of shenanigans could I get into?".
"You should've gone to China, you know, 'cause I hear they give away babies like free iPods. You know, they pretty much just put them in those t-shirt guns and shoot them out at sporting events.".
"That ain't no etch-a-sketch. This is one doodle that can't be un-did, homeskillet.".
(Thank you Rainn Wislon!).
"Yeah, I'm a legend. You know, they call me the cautionary whale.".
"Next time I see that Bleeker kid I'm going to punch him in the wiener.".
"Thanks for having me and my irresponsible child over your house.".
"You should try talking to it. 'Cause, like, supposedly they can hear you even though it's all, like, ten-thousand leagues under the sea.".
"I'm just gonna go ahead an nip this thing in the bud. 'Cause you know, they say pregnancy often leads to, you know...infants.".
"When I see them all running like that, with their pork swords bouncing around in their shorts, I always picture them naked, even if I don't want to.".
