Review of Juno (2007) by Jon P — 14 Dec 2013
Revelling in quirky affectation and oh-so-casual comic sarcasm till it's blue in the face, Jason Reitman's overwritten teen-having-a-baby tale is a real drag. Diablo Cody's self-assured screenplay isn't half as clever as it thinks it is; the comedy solely reliant on marmite-like smarminess and the drama and romance both too shallow and poorly probed to provide the drive necessary for the film to move, inspire or even grab your sincere attention.
Ellen Page performs well and the sweet soundtrack evokes a few smiles until it becomes too repetitive for its own good but, in all, Juno is too dull to feel cinematic and too superfluous to feel realistic. Verdict: a lengthy lull of charmless, overhyped tripe.
