Review of Junior Bonner (1972) by Jarett B — 24 Sep 2007
This is a disappointing outing from Peckinpah and McQueen, despite the fact that it picks up emotional steam toward its conclusion. There is no reason to get attached to any of the characters until at least the last quarter of the film, and mainly only because McQueen's silence begins to grow on you.
Also, Peckinpah's slow-motion, jump-cutting, cross-cutting style of direction just seems out of place in some sequences as this picture is one about ordinary life. It made me want to watch "The Wild Bunch" more than finish the rest of this film.
Comparing this to "The Wild Bunch" would be a criminal offence though. I understand the lamentation and longing for the past that the picture frames, but the only interesting person to watch is McQueen.
