I found it surprisingly witty, or maybe not witty exactly, but honest. Amy Adams over-exceeds what I would have expected. I was in awe of Alessandro Nivola's voice, very wonderful and calming... I about wanted to kill Johnny until the end, just barely.
It was sad yet blindingly poetic in its dark moments.
