Review of Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle (2017) by Jean K — 22 Jul 2018
When I first saw the trailer to this I immediately thought...no. They're stomping all over a classic adventure movie I loved growing up and this will just become some senseless over the top action movie vehicle for The Rock.
However, having taken a whole lot of cash and generated some very positive reviews I had to give it a go and was pleasantly surprised. This time the action moves to a video game that takes one young man back in 1996.
It is then rediscovered 20 years later by a group of Breakfast Club players who find themselves in detention. Once zapped into the game they find themselves transported into their video game alter egos that are the very opposites of who they are in real life.
Here they are sent on a quest to return a jewel, fighting bad guys and escaping big beasties along the way before they can return home. It plays out in quite a clever way, as the behaviour of the characters and how the action plays out is just like it would in such a video game.
It's a fun, silly movie that pays tribute to the original and is worth seeing for an entertaining couple of hours.
