Review of Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle (2017) by Toby H — 26 Jul 2018
Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle is an energetic, funny and fast-paced adventure film that successfully injects new life into this established formula, although sometimes getting bogged down in character development and emotional scenes.
Undoubtedly Jumanji's biggest strength, the (adult) cast pulls off their roles perfectly. Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart have excellent chemistry but Jack Black, as expected, is responsible for the best laughs.
Karen Gillan also has moments to shine. The action is also great with some intense, over-the-top sequences. However, Jumanji slows down in attempting to develop the younger-versions of its characters.
These scenes are often dull due to the one-dimensional high-school versions of the characters. Overall, excellent action, and great humour propel this sequel forward however, it fails to maintain that momentum in its character moments.
