Review of Julie & Julia (2009) by Michael D — 25 Apr 2011
Once again, another fantastic film by the fantastic Meryl Streep. The movie takes place both in New York City in 2002, and France in (I believe) 1949. The story is about modern day Julie Powell, who is determined to start a blog after her snotty friend's bragging about hers.
Julie finally decides that she wants her blog to be about cooking all 524 recipes in Julia Child's cookbook "Mastering the Art of French Cooking" in 365 days. While we watch Julie try to master each of the recipes, we go back and forth from Julie's time to the time of Julia Child.
We learn where Julia learned to cook, the process of publishing her cookbooks and meet her entire family. Meryl Streep's performance in this film is just as good or even better than "Sophie's Choice.
" She's already nominated for Best Actress at the Golden Globes and SAG Awards and she'll definitely get the nomination for the Oscars (and probably will win). Amy Adams is also great (what else is new?), but Meryl simply steals the show.
One of my all time favorite films.
