Review of Judgment at Nuremberg (1961) by Steve C — 10 Jul 2008
One of Stanley Kramer's best films is this serious-handed and political courtroom drama. Although it's a bit long, lacks in the entertainment department, and is drawn out, the film is still a stellar and important piece of cinema.
It takes a controversial and important historical subject matter (Nazi Germany indictment) and explores it with humanity, complexity, and questions. The themes involving free will vs. lack of choice, the true meaning of evil, and the power of justice make the story a lot more thought provoking for something that should prove entirely one sided.
In all, I recommend this film if you like coutroom dramas. The story is intense, the performances are spectacular (especially from Maximilian Schell), and the direction is spot on.
